  • (Oregon Historical) Mapping An American Frontier" Oregon In 1850, William A. Bowen, 1975
A brilliantly imagined work that unveils something of the demographics and life along the Oregon frontier. Primarily informed by the U.S. census data, Bowen pulls together these streams of data to chart out facets of life, such as population, beef cattle and notably "Households Containing Persons Born In Tennessee". The later map hints at the waves of settlement that pulled from this specific southern state, and the clusters of settlement they created from roughly modern Astoria down to Springfield. An interesting reminder of the community migrations that occurred, even during the 19th century, just as humans have done for centuries prior. Six maps and two census data tables compose this large interesting work. Condition is very good, size is approximately 40 x 27 (inches).
