While post war strategies made Alaska a new and greater frontier of defense, this map shows the "DEW Line", which as the "Distant Early Warning" system that was aimed at the U.S.S.R., there was so much more that was valuable to the nation. Even this general pictorial map shows native people, panning for gold in nearby Dawson, but notably it includes an oil derrick not far from Anchorage a resource that would just grow in importance into the 20th century.
