(Architecture) First Steel Skeleton Skyscraper - 1884-1885, Thom, 1968
In the wake of the Chicago fires that swept through the city, architect William Labaron Jenney designed the next great step in building upward. Brick buildings could only reach up to five or six floors due to their own massive weight, but with declining prices of iron and steel, Jenney had a plan. In 1884 he laid out the structure of the Home Life Insurance building in Chicago which would rise to nine stories and would set a new standard for construction. Condition is very good.
