  • Herschel or Uranus, & Leverrier or Neptune.

From a focused study on the best of what was known of the heavens, this work by Smith gives illustrations for particular facets of earth, its neighbors and the workings of the solar system. Here an illustration for the distant large planets of Neptune and Uranus. Neptune is still named after the French mathematician who predicted the existence of the planet by observing Uranus. The planet Uranus is here named "Herchel" after the German born British astronomer who discovered the planet.
