(China - Beijing) A Map and History of Peiping; former-ly known as Peking; capital of provinces, princedoms....
Frank Dorn was a student of China who spent many years there with the US Army serving on the staff of General Stilwell during WWII. He also was a talented illustrator who made this elaborate pictorial map showing the scenes and history of the city. The map is filled with sketches of residents at work from bakers and carpenters to the executioner. Architectural vignettes illustrate key buildings and locations. The border is a procession of more illustrations of the history of the city and a parade in honor of a wedding and another for a funeral. Heavily influenced by the pictorial maps of Jo Mora, who was a friend, this map comes closest to that dense handsome style. This very clean edition is dissected and laid on canvas to facilitate folding.
A beautiful map in excellent condition. Image size is 33 x 29.5, full printed color
