  • (CO. - Denver) Birds - eye- View Downtown Denver, Francis J. Pierson, 1974
A neighbor down the street from Pierson knew that he liked maps, and just had to show him this new map of Manhattan. It was Hermann Bollmann's map of New York City and Pierson was stunned and overwhelmed at the work, but he immediately understood the approach and how it was painstakingly created. Pierson had studied architecture and was doing drafting for an oil & gas company at the time, so in his free time, he set about to make his own Bollmann-type map, but for downtown Denver. Using available areal photos, as well as taking photos and sketching out individual buildings, Pierson began to translate the area into a hand drawn interpretation. He began the work in the Spring of 1973, and by 1974 he had published this, his first view, which would lead to many others and eventually him going into the map business as "Pierson Graphics". A great rarity from an important Denver based 20th century map maker.
