(England, Wales)A Pictorial Chart Of English Literature, Rand McNally 1929
Compiled by Ethel Wylie and illustrated by Ella Van Leer, this is an exemplary instance of what early pictorial maps were like. While they obviously draw on historic cartography, its the new approach that the artist weaves in with their own style, priority and composition.
Produced during a time that Rand McNally realized the draw and popularity of the pictorial style, this was one of their thematic publications that looked at English Literature. Done in a historic style, this map has vignettes for key figures such as Shakespeare and Darwin, but includes many other names throughout. The surrounding decorative border looks back to the time of the tribes of England, up through literary landmarks such as Beowulf and Chaucer, up to the modern age.
Condition is very good, with original cloth backing and solid even color remaining. Image size is 26.25 x 34 (inches)
