The 19th century was a time of internal turmoil for Germany, and this map lampoons nation as "Big breathless Gretchen" who needs to get herself in order. What has once been a stable country in central Europe now is in disarray, and is judeged by her neighbors. Indeed even Goethe and Schiller are shown in the upper left looking down in disgust. Rare/
