Baron de Lahontan was a French military man that served in the late 17th century throughout Canada and into modern day Wisconsin and Minnesota and northern plains. When he returned to France and wrote about his expedition he included a discussion on the "Long River" which fed into the Mississippi and stretched into the plains. This river shown on the far western edge of the map is considered by some to be the first encounter with the Missouri River. Throughout the map are notations of placenames, forts and abundant comments about the vast Iroquois nation. This is a rare early English edition of the map.

Condition is very good, with small repaired opening tear and the typical close right margin. Image size is approximately 9 x 13.25 (inches)
