  • - N. America -U.S.
  • Hydrographical Basin of the Upper Mississippi River from Astronomical and Barometrical Observations, Surveys and Information, by J.N. Nicollet in the years 1836, 37, 38 and 40 assisted ...by Lt. J.C. Fremont, of the Corps of Engineers...under the direction of Col. J.J. Abert...1843

This is the first great map of the upper Mississippi basin. Nicollet came from France to conduct the survey according to the latest European methods and young Fremont was assigned to help him thus beginning his own career as an Army explorer. Several years of field surveys preceded this map and it reflects great care and attention. The map covers the region north of the Missouri, between the Red River and the Mississippi north of St Louis. It is a remarkable piece of work covering this large region with a detail never before achieved. It became the base map of the region for many years. It only appears occasionally on the market. Not in Wheat.

Condition is good with bit of light staining where it is seamed, and some sporadic foxing which is not unusual. Image size is 31x37 (inches), B&W, folded as issued.
