It was a distinct time of change for India. While as the surrounding vignettes note, India did contribute two million soldiers to the war effort, it was also the time when Gandhi was leading the nation toward independence. Printed in the US just above the body of the map is a comparative geographic image with India overlaying the US, India being "roughly half the area of the U.S.A., has almost three times the population. The map itself is color coded per "British India" and the "Indian States", each of the states named. A large inset map shows the elevations throughout the subcontinent.
