The basis of the map is in following the travels of Bento De Góis, a Portuguese Jesuit traveler and explorer who was the first European to make the journey from India to China, via Afghanistan. In trekking across Asia his is counted as the person to prove that the "Cathay" of Marco Polo's stories and "China" are indeed the same place. He set out on his long journey around 1602 and toward the end of 1605 he and his group would enter China, cross the Great Wall, and settle for a time in China, where he would later die. It's an almost unimaginable adventure for the time. And though meticulously documented, his journals were destroyed by some caravan peoples while travelling, but through letters and some first hand accounts, it was studied.
This map notably also includes the mythical lake of Chimay of Chiamay, which was supposed to be the origin of many of the great rivers of Southeast Asia. Condition is very good with a close lower margin. Image size is approximately 6.25 x 9.25 (inches)
