(Japanese) Temple De Daibuth, Mallet, 1683
Alain Mallet was a talented engineer and cartographer who served in several different king's courts, aside from his military experience. This proximity to the crown probably also afforded him insights into geography and frontiers of exploration of the time. In the 1680's he began a several volume project to illustrate and chart both the history and contemporary views of the world and something of its cultures.
A fantastical view of the interior of a Japanese temple. Filled with statuary and and patrons in the nearby courtyard. Centered on a large statue of a seated figure we assume to be the Buddha. Condition is very good. Image size is approximately 6.75 x 4.25 (inches)
