(Literary) The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn From the Book By Mark Twain, Everett Henry, c. 1953
It's one discipline to brings moments from a books to life with great illustrations, it's a whole other skill to make a visual summary of an entire book. If there was ever a master of the "book as map" genre, it would undisputedly be Everett Henry. He could so distill a story, geogaphy and the progression of the events into a single image that was engaging and inventive. Here is his classic summary for the American classic from Mark Twain, and with vignettes that capture key moments, it also features a series of flowing maps that give context.
All of these images were sourced from a series of original paintings that Henry completed for the Harris Seybold Company. Over the years an enduring employee made sure that the paintings were kept safe and their value was understood. When there was a company merger or yet another change of ownership, he'd steward the keeping of the paintings, just as a personal passion. In time all those paintings would be given to the Library of Congress. Well done Rich Foley, well done. You can listen to an interview with him here... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IKRXU2YJWk4
