Map of the Territory of Minnesota exhibiting the route of the expedition to the Red River of the North, in the Summer of 1849
In the progression for understanding Minnesota, the upper Midwest, and its terrain, after the map by Nicollet comes this map by Capt. John Pope. Building on the foundation mapped by Nicollet, this map by Pope improves on the "Red River of the North", but also lays out several potential routes for the railroad, and a canal which would give river access to Lake Superior. A substantial next step in the development of this portion of the North.
