    In looking at the history of European exploration of modern New Zealand, certainly the first was Abel Tasman in 1642, but after a bloody encounter with the native Maori in Golden Bay, they never made it to land. It was over a century later that 1769, Capt Cook and his men landed at Poverty Bay, also had a bloody encounter with the Maori, but persevered made peace with the people. He did a detailed series of studies for the land, people and geography, and produced the foundational maps for the islands.
