(NYC - NY) John Held Jr's Map Of New York Night Clubs - From Actual Survey By And Under The Direction Of Lip Stick, John Held Jr., c. 1930
Yes, prohibition was on, but John Held Jr wasn't deterred from mapping the culture of indulgence. With a cluster of clubs and speak easies in central Manhattan all encircled as a region of "High Taxi Rates In Shaded Zone", there are plenty of other "Blind Pigs" and "Gin Mills" to be found in the outlying areas. Held includes stunning vignettes of "Mayor Walker greeting working classes at sunrise", where the mayor of NYC at the time, who had probably been out for an all nighter, tips his top hat to a stunned city worker. Also shown is a "Highjacker and Bootlegger do battle over a woman", and "A murdered broadway butterfly" who looks to be passed out in a chair.
