(OH.) Plat of The Seven Ranges Of Townships being Part of the Territory of the United States N.W. of the River Ohio Which by a late act of Congress are directed to be sold..., Hutchins/ Carey, c. 1800
While this is a foundational map for the beginnings of Ohio, it's also a landmark illustration of the U.S. taking a serious and pragmatic approach to managing settlement of its lands. Here, as neatly surveyed by Thomas Hutchins is the stretch of land along the western banks of the Ohio River that would be sold and partially managed in the future by the U.S. government. Divided into "sections or tracts of a mile square" that include some basic notation for drainages that cross the land, this large map shows potential plots, and some of the neighboring lands set aside "by a late act of Congress for the purposes of satisfying Military Warrants", and "Lands granted to the Ohio Company".
