(Philippines) MacArthur's March On Manila, Van Swearingen, 1945 After the underestimation of the Japanese forces in 1942, MacArthur and his family had to flee the Philippines, and caused MacArthur to utter his famous quote that he would "return". In 1944, he indeed would return and begin the press to reclaim the islands. Here is a "new relief map" for Luzon that shows the progression of U.S. troops as they draw closer and closer to Manila.
