Darton, 1900 Darton graduated grade school at 13 and began working at his uncle's pharmaceutacal factory, he published on chemistry and began to study his uncle's mineral collection, which led him into geology. He also started analyzing New York wells for water contamination, and in his spare time began to catalog articles on the geology of New York. His work was discovered by G.K. Gilbert of the U.S.G.S. and he was hired to work in geology. This map is another prime example of Darton's clear and detailed work related to the West, and shows the major formations south of the Black Hills, as well as the cultural information of towns, roads, railroads and regional borders.
