  • Smith's or Blunt's Island – Anacapa Island in Santa Barbara Channel

It's an interesting cartographic connection with the world of art, but the first printed appearance of James Whistler was actually this little map that covers Anacapa Island. This legendary little map is composed of two maps on one sheet, one for a coastal island off of Washington, and the depiction of the Anacapas off of Santa Barbara. A handsome shore profile depicts rugged coast, and in the distance we see flocks of birds flying toward the horizon. It's lore that its the artistic additions of birds, and wildlife that got Whistler fired from his job at the US Coast Survey... and maybe it was for the best. .
