Venera 4, Tass, 1967
The engineering challenges of propelling and managing a craft are one thing, it's another to have a probe land on rocky planet with temps above 400 degrees and at pressures you'd find at 3,000 feet underwater, and be able to send back data to earth. This image is one of the many "Venera" missions that the Soviets mounted to explore the atmosphere and surface of Venus. Where many of its predecessors would fail, this probe would be the first to successfully enter that atmosphere of another planet.
