For the pre-Civil War traveller, here was the state of development full of notations for not just towns and counties, but railroads and the major wagon roads ("Upper Presidio Road", "Laredo Road", "Connelly's Trail", "Comanche Trail"). Most settlements are nestled in the central eastern portions of the state, with vast lands in the south and west being unpopulated. Far southern border counties include "Wild Horses and Cattle".
