For those that lived through this time, the shock of this event can't be overstated. The long, grinding decades of the cold war seemed that only a full on battle would end the stalemate. Even the intelligence agencies of the US were caught off guard. Some at the time subscribed to the conspiracy theory that it was all fake to lull the west into passivity before the Soviets would rise up to strike.
But it happened. No bombs, or clandestine executions. It just collapsed. Yes, with consistent external pressure being applied. But, its failing economy and the lack of integrity and belief in the Soviet systems... It just folded in on itself.
