(Thematic - Europe) (Post War Political), Low 1952 If we were to hold to the premise that every map has to have essential elements (title, scale, legend, compass, latitude & longitude), then this isn't a map. But in a 1952 an article looked back at the "serio-comic" maps of the 19th century and realized this genre provided a valuable assessment of the turbulent history of the continent and its nations. And to spotlight the impact of this style, they included a current view of Europe as it was at the time. On this map we first notice the imposing face of Joseph Stalin in the east with his mustache serving as the Iron Curtain that has descended on the continent. While in the west we see a thin destitute woman in Spain while a relaxing Franco fishes in the Atlantic, likewise in Britain we see a thin English figure tightening his belt, while two cats representing Ireland are confronting each other. It's a beautiful and simple image to convey the complex textures of life and politics at the time. Rare. Condition is very good with some minor loss and light staining along the centerfold, but strong color. Image size is approximately 12 x 19 (inches)
