Some of the earliest thematic maps that distilled complex ideas into a easily grasped image were maps based on religious texts. Things such as John Bunyan's "Pilgrims Progress" is a classic of the genre that would generate such "way of salvation" maps. Here is a early 19th century rendering of Bunyan's book with dashes of original hand color and a detailed image.
