(Thematic -Social) In Darkest England, And The Way Out...

The revival movements of the 18th and 19th century had a single focus, to get people saved and changed. And it was always anticipated that once individuals were saved and abiding in a new life, society would soon follow. The focus was reaching individuals, the benefit will be a changed culture.

But General Booth the leader of the Salvation Army movement, began to realize that saving people might mean something very practical at too. Here, the perishing at the bottom of the image are drowning in the urban traps of "Starvation", "Despair", Unemployment, Prison, Beggary and more. Booth envisioned alternatives like job training, factories, schools, legal assistance, women's shelters, and more. He also saw the next step of sending people to "Farm Colonies", and the "Colony Across The Sea" to build their own lives and get away from their past.

Booth began a program to buy plots of rural land that could become new farm colonies, and a fresh new start for those lost in urban squalor. One such colony was established in southeast Colorado in the early 1900's and was called Amity. The goal was to set people up with very basic farms, and to help them gain momentum. Unfortunately, the land purchased was worked unsuccessfully after several years and the colony was abandoned. Unknown to the purchasers of the land, it was severally alkaline and rendered little to nothing.
