(U.S. & West) Military Map of the United States prepared in the Office of the Quarter Master General U.S.A., US Govt, 1857 A revealing strategic map for how the U.S. considered its points of vulnerability and future settlement. There is a jagged line dark line that almost separates the country in half but identifies the "Extreme of Outposts in 1845". West of that line is the military "Dept of the West", which is crossed by three major trails the "Route to Salt Lake City", the Santa Fe trail, and the Canadian River trail, with only sparse forts dotting the massive landscape that reaches to the continental divide. Beyond it is the "Dept of the Pacific", and to the south the "Dept of New Mexico" and Dept of Texas". It conveys quickly that beyond that line of "outposts" is a different quality of security and settlement, as opposed to the more stable "Dept of the East". Wheat called this map "illuminating", with reason. Wheat 929. Condition is very good has been professionally restored and backed with tissue. Image size is approximately 13.5 x 30 (inches)
