It was an era of acceleration for the growing country, and here a rare interstitial stage of change as it evolved. This earlier edition of the map features some interesting notations from a distorted "Main/Sagadahok" in the northeast, to the large unnamed southern territory that presses into Georgia. Immediately striking is the "Indiana" territory that spans from modern Minnesota, through Illinois, Indiana and Ohio, full of notations for native peoples and a handful of forts. Inside the "Indiana" is an embryonic "Ohio" territory that extends from the northern shores of the Ohio River dotted with a few towns. Further south, the eastern border of Tennessee reaches into Norther Carolina. Beyond the reshuffling borders of the young states, past the Mississippi river is the massive Louisiana territory and a primitive understanding of the terrain and paths of the rivers of the West, such as the Missouri and Arkansas rivers. A great, scarce map.
