Alexander Von Humboldt, the German polymath was the type of genius that arrives once every generation or so, and his impacts were profound in many fields (botany, biology, geology, meterology, etc). In cartography were indebted to him for the conceptual maps of isothermals and botanical maps, but also for his series of foundational maps for early Mexico and U.S. It's hard to imagine a better person to have an overview of Mexican intelligence at the time and help distill that into the best maps of the time for this extended empire. They would also become important references for explorers like Pike and mapmakers such as Arrowsmith. Here his classic map covering from the Connecticut to the upper Midwest, and out to the California coast, and south through the hear of Mexico and into the nearby Caribbean. Wheat #272-5
