This is the situation of the changing nations, as taught to the school children of the day. Where just fifty years prior the wild frontier was at the edges of the Mississippi river, now its just beyond a row of states and territories that are built off its western banks. Most notably immediately is that massive Mexican empire that reaches up through the Southwest and abuts against the Oregon territory that covers the northwest. But after that, and to the delight of many Texans is the vast expanse of the Republic of Texas with a "stovepipe" panhandle that reaches up into what would be modern day Wyoming. Above Texas is a familiar Indian Territory, and beyond that a primitive Nebraska territory that spans up to the Canadian border, and includes most of the "Great American Desert" ("This desert is traversed by numerous herds of Buffaloes and wild Horses and inhabited by roving tribes of Indians".
