While her name has slipped from common knowledge, during the 19th century Frances E. Willard was a force as a suffragist, educator, and pro-temperance activist. Having been a part of the founding of the Women's Christian Temperance Movement her works are credited with setting the stage for the acceptance of prohibition of alcohol in the U.S. This map notes that institutions which bear her name from California to Maine and many points in between.
