Charles Hitchcock was the son of Edward Hitchcock a distinguished geologist and educator, and Charles continued the legacy. Working in various capacities as state geologist, he also taught at Dartmouth and was later the founder of the Geological Society of America. This map is Charles basic geological map for the US and was published by Gray with hand color identifying nine different types of formations.
