(US-Native) Early Indian Tribes, Culture Areas, And Linguistic Stocks, Sturtevant - Smithsonian - US Govt., 1983
Was it the imprint of European culture with its distinct languages, ethnic identities & borders that influenced such maps for Native Americans? It seems these maps always wanted neat borders & clear taxonomies to identify people & their locations. For peoples that were more migratory, and could even splinter into bands that might integrate into another tribes, this well intended general location of tribes gives solid generalities but includes inherit flaws. Even tribes like the "Kiowa" shown here in the southern plains were first encountered by Lewis & Clark as they explored the upper Missouri River... but people move, especially after colonial settlement expands. A crisp instance of the map that includes a small map of Alaskan tribes on the back. Condition is very good. Image size is approximately 26.25 x 17 (inches)
