(West) Western Territories Of The United States., Olney, c. 1844
A wonderful focus for the mish-mash of frontiers that met in the American West. With rich notations for native tribes ("Pawnees", "Clalams"), major rivers and regional topography ("New Park", "Old Park...) it's clear that this map owes a large debt to the work of Fremont and Preuss, and government explorations of the time. The hand color helps distinguish firm boundaries between the territories, which were so sparsely populated as to only really exist in the minds and maps of legislators rather than the identity and infrastructure of regional peoples. Does clearly show the panhandle of Texas reaching through New Mexico and modern Colorado up into present day Wyoming. This is a great moment in the changing West which would only last for a few more years when the Mexican cession would bring a huge change the Southwest.
Condition is very good, with bold original hand color. Image size is approximately 10.5 x 17.5 (inches)
