(WWII - Philippines) I Have Returned
Two years earlier and Douglas MacArthur and staff were surrounded by Japanese forces on the island of Corregidor and with considerable luck they escaped through stormy seas to reach the far southern island of Mindanao and then flew out to Australia. He stated from Australian shores that he had "I have come through and I shall return" to the Philippines. His determination became symbolic of Allied efforts and indeed two years later the Japanese would be expelled and he would make his proclamation. This large and rare map shows both the islands overall and specifically the area of Leyte.
